The state’s logical direction, when non-Christian, is to become increasingly coercive. This does not mean that the church does not resort to the same strategy at times. Dostoyevsky’s Grand Inquisitor is an excellent depiction of this. The goal is to compel men to be good and to give them no other choice. The choice then, as Dostoyevsky saw, is slavery, not freedom.
